Welcome to St. Margaret's Church - Historic background - cont'd

Several times during it's history the church has fallen into neglect, it was almost entirely rebuilt in the sixteenth century but fell into disrepair again in the eighteenth century when it was used as a barn.

By 1826 the church was in a dangerous condition. The vaults had given way and some graves had been dug too near the foundations of the church, the parish had to apply for permission to rebuild the church. This permission had to be obtained from :- The Incorporated Society for Promoting the Enlargement, Repairing of Churches and Chapels, 2 Parliament Street, Westminster. This permission was granted under application No. 1093 dated 27th June 1829. The estimate for these alterations was £632.8s.0d. work was completed October 1830.

By 1855 the church was again in a bad way and was used only four times a year for celebrations of the Holy Communion and in 1865 a proposal was made to abandon the church entirely and to build a new one in the village. This was not carried out and in 1871 another restoration was begun.

During the early 20th century many changes were undertaken by Sir Duncan Campbell.
